Typewriters, letterpress, and stamps are tools Kentucky-based artist Leslie Nichols uses to create portraits. Meet the artist, see her unique work, and try your hand at typing on a typewriter.
Leslie Nichols is well known for her works created on manual typewriters, which are featured in Typewriter Art: A Modern Anthology (2014) and The Art of Typewriting (2015). The words she types become portraits of people she meets. An NEA Studio Residency Grant from Women’s Studio Workshop in New York supported her recent experiments with letterpress printing. Leslie has created art while in residence in exciting places such as Zion National Park, Harlaxton, England, and Can Serrat, Spain. Her work has been recognized with grants from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, AAUW, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and the Great Meadows Foundation. Bowling Green, Kentucky is the location of her studio.
