Buon Fresco Painting Demonstration, by Michael Nichols
See a demonstration of the ancient technique of buon fresco painting, made famous by Michelangelo’s ceiling and Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry mural. Fresco is a challenging technique that requires painting onto fresh wet plaster before it dries.
Michael Nichols creates artwork using two ancient artist mediums, metalpoint drawing and buon fresco painting. His contemporary takes on these mediums have been featured in exhibitions throughout the United States in venues that include the Boston Center for the Arts, the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center, and the Huntsville Museum of Art.
Nichols has received many recognitions and honors that include more than two dozen awards from competitive exhibitions. In 2010, he received an Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council. He was awarded three WKU faculty grants, "Buon Fresco Technique", "Painted in Stone", and "Refresh" that supported research in the technique of buon fresco painting.
Michael earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Fontbonne University. He lives in Bowling Green, KY with his partner, artist Leslie Nichols. Michael is a Professor of Art at Western Kentucky University.
